The rciationship between the multiplct splitting in core ekctron binding energies of radicals and the unpaired orbital qin density distribution is developed wd an explicit formula derived. The atomic intershell exchznse interaction is shown to be important to determining magnitudes and trends in the multipfct spfittirg. The information obtained from an clcctron spin resonnnce spectroscopy experiment throu$ the isotropic electron-nuclear hyper-, fine Tateraction and an X-rar photoelectron spectroscopy experiment is shown to be complementary.
