✦ Synopsis

The application of concepts used in producing tandem solid state photovoltaic devices to photoelectrochemical cells has resulted in improved spectral response and photovoltaic output. As in solid state devices, the key to achieving good photovoltaic performance is optimization of the semiconductor properties in each part of the tandem arrangement. This has been done for the thin film CdS/CdSe/sulfide-polysulfide system with an improvement of over 15% in conversion efficiency being obtained. Preliminary results showing significant current enhancement by the addition of a CdSe backwall electrode to the CdTe/selenide-polyselenide system are also reported.
