✦ Synopsis

Multiphoton ionisation of the alkanes butane to dodecane has been studied using a laser of wavelength 600 nm, pulse length 0.6 ps and focused intensity lOI W/cm2. Mass spectra show not only a rich fragmentation pattern but also the existence of H+, C+ and C*+ ions, whose energies (ranging for H+ from 14 to 28 eV) vary linearly with chain length. The same alkanes have been studied with an excimer laser of wavelength 248 nm, pulse length 5 ps and focused intensity lOI W/cm*. Mass spectra show a similar fragmentation pattern but the H+ ions now have energies in the range I to 1.4 eV.
