Lattice bands io MgO involving interactions of infiami radiation with one, tyo, three, four an& fnre phdnons have been obsewed between 300 to 2000 cm:'. These multlphonon combination bands (sumination 0' difference) have been explained i+tenm of four cbartite~@tic phonons (LO, TO, LA and TA) at or near the zone b?undary. Two-phonon difference bands have also been observed t?wards the lotir frequency, (C TO& side of $he ~ectrum.
