β¦ Synopsis
The P-T-liquid composition values of the solid-liquid-gas coexistence curves were determined for the binary systems naphthalene-ethylene and biphenyl-ethylene using the first freezing point method. The technique was further extended to the determination of the P and T values of the solid-solid-liquidgas equilibria for the systems naphthalene-biphenyl-CO2 and naphthalene-phenanthrene-C02. The presence of a second solid increases the freezing point depression significantly, regardless of whether its triple point is higher or lower than that of the first solid. The results also indicate that the eutectic compositions of the binary solids may vary with pressure. The multiphase equilibria of both binary and ternary mixtures were correlated with some success by means of the Peng-Robinson (PR) equation together with the Adachi-Sugie mixing rule but with the a values of the PR equation reevaluated.
