✦ Synopsis

A computational study of the temporal stability of planar Poiseuille flow in a channel is presented. Using a staggered grid, a basic second-order difference scheme is enhanced at interior point by a fourth-order central difference scheme in the cross-channel direction. A semi-implicit and a fully-implicit time-marching scheme using a multigrid solver is shown to produce a very effective algorithm. The computational results show good agreement in both amplitude and phase with the linear theory obtained by the Orr-Sommerfeld equations.
