Abstract
The application of 1D selective, 2D and 3D NMR techniques to the structure elucidation of verbascosaponin (1) is demonstrated. Combinations of ROESY and TOCSY are powerful tools. Each of these multidimensional ROESY‐TOCSY and TOCSY‐ROESY experiments provides detailed information about the sequence of oligosaccharide structures and the positions of glycosidation. The structure of a further saponin 2 from the officinal drug Flores Verbasci is determined as 3β‐O‐{α‐L‐rhamnopyranosyl‐(1→4)‐β‐D‐glucopyranosyl‐(1→3)‐[β‐D‐glucopyranosyl‐(1→2)‐]‐β‐D‐fucopyranosyl}‐13β,28‐epoxyolea‐11‐ene‐16α,23α‐diol.
