β¦ Synopsis
Hara (Osaka University) and Prasad (Aalborg University) analyze the benefits and disadvantages of employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) as a standard for fourth generation mobile communication systems, explore synchronization and subcarrier recovery methods suited for burst mode OFDM data transmission, and examine the frequency diversity effect in the performance of a coded OFDM scheme. Combinations of OFDM and CDMA are also discussed, and applications of the OFDM scheme in digital broadcasting and wireless LANs are presented. An opening chapter reviews the characteristics of multipath fading radio channels.
