✦ Synopsis

An optimized instrumental neutron actlvatlon analysis method was applied to the comprehenslve trace charactenzatlon of good-and high-purity &con mtnde powders of different orlgms Expernnental modes are given for 55 elements leading to hmlts of detection below 1 ng g -1 for 28 elements, between 1 and 100 ng g-' for 19 elements and lugher than 100 ng g-' for 8 elements For the removal of the radlonuchdes lQL.a, lszTa and "'W, which cause the major actwlty m certam types of materials,, radmchenucal procedures based on catlon exchange from 2 M HCI and amon exchange from 2 M HF were developed '%u was selectively extracted with dlthlzone from 10 M HF for counting the 511-keV line By radmchenucal neutron activation analysis, the hnuts of detectlon were Improved by up to three orders of magmtude Comparison with results obtamed by mductlvely coupled plasma (ICP) atomic ermsSion spectrometv and ICP mass spectrometry shows satisfactory agreement and demonstrates the advantages of neutron actwation analysis especially when low elements contents are to be determmed

The Ghent PM10 stacked Ðlter unit (SFU) sampler was used to collect size-fractionated atmospheric aerosol samples, Ðrst at an urban residential site in Ghent, Belgium, and subsequently at a rural site (Waasmunster, about half way between the cities of Ghent and Antwerp). The samplings at Ghent took
