✦ Synopsis
The thermally activated escape rate of a classical particle from the multi-dimensional potential well is considered in the case of highly anisotropic friction when the friction is small along one coordinate (energy diffusion) and large along the other (Smoluchowski limit). We study the asymptotic law whereby the rate tends to zero when the friction coefficients tend to zero and to infinity, respectively.
