โœฆ Synopsis

Hawaii

-based fuel cell membrane company Hoku Scientific has formed a joint development relationship with Japanese electronics giant Sanyo Electric, the focus of which is to develop a new membraneelectrode assembly technology for use in Sanyo's PEM fuel cell. The MEA will incorporate Sanyo electrode technology and the Hoku Membrane.

The agreement includes the financial, service and technical contributions of both companies, totaling more than US$6m. Joint development work is planned for the next 18 months, but a successful outcome would probably be the basis for a long-term customer/supplier relationship between the two companies. This deal reinforces the opportunity for PEM fuel cells in the stationary power markets, particularly residential users in countries such as Japan.

Hoku Scientific is developing a new membrane technology for use in PEM fuel cells, the 'Hoku Membrane', which offers the potential for substantially better performance than current leading membranes, while reducing product costs by up to 90%.
