✦ Synopsis

This article is a summary of the workgroup on Audience/ Funding at the recent Society of Magnetic Resonance Workshop on Efficacy and Effectiveness of Imaging: An Evaluation of Methodologies.

@ W H O NEEDS AND USES EFFICACY AND

EFFECTIVENESS RESEARCH?

THE SOCIETY of Magnetic Resonance sponsored a methodology workshop trying to improve the design and implementation of efficacy and effectiveness research efforts by our members. Results of this effort have a larger audience than MRI researchers. Three groups of audiences were identified: (a) imaging researchers, (b) external validators, and (c) ultimate users.

Imaging Researchers

Those professionals who have the greatest contact with MFU research, including radiologists, cardiologists, and neurologists, will directly apply MFU efficacy methodology. Other referral specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, surgical and radiation oncology, family practice, and obstetrics/gynecology will also benefit from a formalized method for the analysis of imaging methods. The Society of Magnetic Resonance initiated this effort to encourage improved research in this vital area. Other imaging societies such as the Radiological Society of North America, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the American Society of Neuroradiology, and the American College of Radiology will benefit from the development of efficacy research methodology by the submission of better research ie, the development of the radiology field, and the applicability of the methodology to other radiologic modalities. Governmental research branches such as the NIH, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) can use these methods in the developmental analysis of future research dealing with the in-
