โฆ Synopsis
PHILOSOPHICAL STUDIES notion of linguistic activity as "essentially" not locutionary after all. And this seesawing between exclusive alternatives is beginning to look fatuous, with its temptations in the directions of extremist metaphysics, materialistic and spiritualistic. Perhaps a way out would be to begin with a preanalytic or pre-special concept of "linguistic act" accommodating enough to yield as a precipitate Aristotle's notion of intellectual activity at one extreme, and Watson's behavioristic one at the other. These then would be postanalytic distinctions featuring "aspects" of language-using. Working out the details of this, and how the aspects are related within the primordial "holophrasis" of the fact-before-analysis, is quite a job. In the process, one would have to do justice to the difference between "action" and "movement," the behavior of a "thing" and the conduct of a "person," etc. Which is, after all, to stay at dead center of the traditional problems of philosophy.
