It was a coincidence that we became interested in research on oncogenic retroviruses. We were following a surprising immunological observation made over 20 years ago by Festenstein (1973, review). At that time, it was known that mixed lymphocyte cultures between cells expressing different major-histocompatibility-complex(MHC) molecules stimulated a very strong reaction activating 1 to 5% of peri heral T lymphocytes. The frequency of reactive T cells was 103 to lo4 times
