papers on this subject. He has also managed to go beyond a simple recitation of the results of other people's work. In general we receive a useful and critical comparison of the literature. The evolution of ideas about the theory of each aspect is also very well argued and presented. The opening section on 'the meso-scale' is a little weak as meso-scale theory is mainly based upon the primitive equations of motion which would be valid at the macro-scale too. However for readers not well-versed in these equations the section should provide a useful introduction as long as they are aware that it is the ageostrophic component that is often so important in meso-scale circulations.
