A Dupont-Sorvall MT-1 ultramicrotome, normally a manually operated instrument, was equipped with a small motor. Ultrathin sections were successfully cut at rates from one to five sections per minute. This lowcost conversion to automatic operation offers an alternative to the purchase of a new ultramicrotome, as well as making a classic instrument more flexible.
