✦ Synopsis


Investigation of the evolution of the DNA sequences that comprise a small gene cluster in jive closely related species of Drosophila shows that it evolves as a mosaic, with adjacent subregions displaying very diferent rates and types of evolution. It appears that local direrences in the inpuence of selectional and mutational forces result in the formation of these distinct subregions.
