While teachers in American colleges and universities, as a result of forces in both society and their profession, find it difficult to raise the question of moral judgment with students, the methods and implications of their disciplines suggest a way of doing so.

During the week of July 5 , 1987, as Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North gave testimony before the congressional committees investigating the Iran-contra affair, some three miles across the city Georgetown University was hosting its annual Alumni College, a week-long program of short courses, lectures, and trips in and around Washington for alumni and parents. But Oliver North was not the only show in town that week. Daniel Berrigan, S. J., the best known member of the Catonsville nine and most recently an actor, with Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro, in Roland Joffe's The Mission, came to Georgetown (the evening before he was arrested, with Martin Sheen, at the Riverside Research Institute in New York) to talk about the film in both its historic and contemporary contexts. At the same time, just a few blocks south of the Capitol, the Acting Company at Arena Stage was in its final week of Zelda Fichandler's superb production of Arthur Miller's The Crucible. As many alumni and parents commented, Georgetown University, set on a hilltop over the city of Washington, was an intriguing place to be taking classes that week.
