✦ Synopsis

A transition state model is presented for detecting drops in visual acuity in diabetics, a common symptom caused by retinopathy the most common cause of adult blindness in the U.K. The model is based on data from the eye tests history of patients attending a diabetic clinic at one of London's major teaching hospitals over several years. The optimization procedure involved is complex and problems are encountered with using an EM type algorithm, and instead the use of simulated annealing is investigated. The results of fitting the model to real data are then briefly discussed.
