✦ Synopsis

Polymerizations of allyl 2,6-dimethylphenyl ether (ADMPhE), 4-allyl-2,6-dimethylphenol (ADMPhOH), propenyl-2,6-dimethylphenyl ether (PrDMPhE) and 4-propenyl-2,6-dimethylphenol (PrDMPhOH) were attempted with BF3.OEt 2 as catalyst; polymers were formed in each case. Unlike the polymers obtained from PrDMPhE and PrDMPhOH, that from ADMPhE was found to have same repeating unit as that from ADMPhOH. In the polymerization of ADMPhE, in situ monomer-isomerization occurred, but the other monomers polymerized without isomerization prior to polymerization. These results indicate that ADMPhE underwent monomer-isomerization polymerization, i.e. ADMPhE isomerized to ADMPhOH before polymerization. From analysis of the resulting polymers, the polymerizations of ADMPhE and ADMPhOH were found to proceed through polyalkylations to the aromatic ring along with the conventional opening of the double bond. The influence of the polymerization solvents and initiators on the polymerization of ADMPhE was also investigated.
