✦ Synopsis

Terbium triborate, TbB 3 O 6 , is con®rmed to adopt at least two different structural modi®cations. Its monoclinic modi®cation represents the terminal member of the isostructural series of REB 3 O 6 with RE = La±Tb, and crystallizes in space group I2/a. The structure consists of chains of [B 6 O 12 ] n 6À building units, that run parallel to the c axis, and tenfold coordinated Tb 3+ which link the borate chains to give a three-dimensional framework.

TbB 3 O 6 , that suffers peritectic decomposition below its melting point, was obtained as single crystals by growth from borate flux. Depending on the borate flux, orthorhombic (space group Pnma) TbB 3 O 6 belonging to the isomorphic series of rare earth triborates with small lanthanides, or monocl
