We show the existence of a "best approximation solution" to the set of equations f, f i = a i , i ∈ I, where {f i } i∈I is a frame for a Hilbert space (H, •, • ) and {a i } i∈I ∈ l 2 (I). We derive formulas showing how the solution changes if {a i } i∈I or {f i } i∈I is perturbed. We explain why the results are important for irregular sampling and show how to obtain concrete estimates in this case. We also give an application to Gabor frames.
