ABBTRACT:

The current-voltage relation, taking into account joule heating, is derived for a model consisting of a uniform filamentary conductor, whose ends are maintained at a fixed temperature, and whose central section has become molten. The results of the analysis give a negative resistance region in the current-voltage curve, provided the resistance of the molten section is greater than the solid section which it replaces. Expel-imentally, it is found that stable negative resistance devices can be fabricated from microjilaments formed entirely from thin metal films on a glass substrate.
