✦ Synopsis

The failure of theories used to explain properties of the alkali halides when applied to alkali nitrates is discussed. A disk-shaped model of the nitrate ion is developed which has a radius of 2.3 A and thickness of 2-2 A. This model is used to discuss some of the properties of molten alkali nitrates.
