Recent histopathologic evidence challenges the teaching that enlargement of a solitary parathyroid gland is invariably caused by an adenoma, whereas multiple gland enlargement results from hyperplasia. We have re-examined the parathyroid tissue obtained from 152 consecutive patients undergoing surge
