## Abstract ## BACKGROUND. Parathyroid carcinoma, atypical parathyroid adenoma, and parathyromatosis can be differentiated relatively easily from typical parathyroid adenomas, but distinguishing them from each other is more difficult. ## METHODS. A retrospective study of 28 consecutive patients
Recent histopathologic evidence challenges the teaching that enlargement of a solitary parathyroid gland is invariably caused by an adenoma, whereas multiple gland enlargement results from hyperplasia. We have re-examined the parathyroid tissue obtained from 152 consecutive patients undergoing surge
