## Abstract The dynamic mechanical thermal properties of a family of poly(α‐alkyl β,L‐aspartate)s bearing various cyclic, linear, and branched alkoxycarbonyl groups in the side chain were studied. The measurements carried out by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) revealed the significant in

✦ Synopsis
As the t,emperatiire of solid poly(&benzyl-L-aspart.ate) (PRLA), (CO . N H . C H .-CH2COOCHrCsH,),, in the a-helical form is raised froml.iO"C, the line width and second moment of the proton magnetic resonance (PMR ) sigiial decrease in stages riiitil the conformational transition to the w-helix occurs a t about 90°C. A similar temperature dependence of the PAIR parameters is observed as the t,ransformed polymer is cooled. Below -100°C (where the lattice is presumed to be rigid), the measured secmd moments are 9.5 OeZ and 10.7 OeZ for the a and w forms, respectively. Second moments, calculated from the Van Vleck formula for the rigid lattice and also estimated for possible mot.iorial cases in which t,he polymer is taken to be in the w form, are compared wit.h the PAIR data. By combinat.ion with t.he resri1t.s of X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopic measiirement,s, a t,eiitat.ive explanation can be made of the types of motioii occurring in PBLA.
