โœฆ Synopsis

eds), Garland Science, 1463 pp., ยฃ44.00, ISBN 0-8153-4072-9 (paperback) (2002) The new edition again offers a very clear version of a very complex subject. One can quibble at times with the choice of what is included and excluded, but ultimately, the authors have achieved a remarkably good balance between information and understanding. Major changes concern chapters 1 and 4-8 in which the research thrust of genomics has resulted in these chapters being developed to form a stand-alone text in molecular biology. The concluding chapter introducing pathogens, the cell biology of infection and innate immunity is also new. Otherwise the format, as in previous editions, pertains.

Each chapter ends with sets of general and topic specific references and a glossary linked to the text and an index. This leaves the student with an excellent text and the interested researcher with a good back-up to those areas with which he/she may not be too familiar. Included with the book, a CD rom-Cell Biology Interactive-offers a very useful series of animated diagrams, snips of films of cellular events and molecular models to extend the text. A wellillustrated, good read at a fair price.
