✦ Synopsis
The velocity dependence of the excitation of mercury to Hg(6 3Pr) by CO(a31$ was determined in a cross beam esperiment by measuring the time-of-flight distribution of both the metastable CO molecules and the mercury 2537 A emission. Fcr a cross section functional dependence of u-'*, n was found to be 0.8 * 0.1 over the relative velocity range u = 300-700 m/set.
