Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog trouwt Liesl met een Duitse weduwnaar en neemt de zorg voor zijn drie kinderen op zich. Haar nieuwe gezin wordt geteisterd door luchtaanvallen en honger. Als een van de kinderen psychische klachten krijgt wordt de liefde van Liesl voor haar gezin op de proef gesteld.
