The antimony/potassium permanganate pyrotechnic system is not gasless although it is used in sealed electric delay detonators. Burning rates of identical compositions vary according to the extent to which the system is confined. The variation is especially marked for the high fuel compositions which

โฆ Synopsis
The Sb/KMnO4 pyrotechnic system has been used as a starting point for introducing modifications, other than those of composition or fuel particle size, aimed at reducing the burning rate to as low a value as possible, for use in longperiod delay detonators. Both inert and reactive additives have been tested. Sb203 had the greatest slowing effect. Physical factors, such as the size and the material of the delay column container, become increasingly important at low burning rates. The cross-sectional area of the column may have to be increased, or a container of low thermal conductivity may have to be used to achieve low burning rates (1 mm s t or less).
