The substituted 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate models 5b and 7, prepared by the addition of glutaconate ester anion to l-acetyl-3:4,4-trlmethyl-2-imidazolinium iodide (2b) and l-acetyl-3-methyl-l,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidinium iodlde (3) transfer-the C(2)-carbons with the attached functional groups to give-an indole derivative which serves as a convenient precursor for the synthesis of nor-deplancheine (~) and nor-epigeissoschizoate (27) •
