โœฆ Synopsis

The recently detected intensity difference between individual, large sunspots in the infrared spectral region is considered. We show that the intensity difference may be explained by a temperature difference of 140-160 K in the upper atmosphere keeping the temperature nearly unchanged below an optical depth approximately equal to unity. The change in temperature in the upper layers alters the observability of the deeper layers and the corresponding intensity.
