β¦ Synopsis
The Oregonator for the Belousov-Zhabotinskii reaction was modelled on a two dimensional surface and solved by the Monte Carlo simulation technique. The three principal intermediate species considered were HBr02, Br-and Ce 4f The generation and consumption of each species on the surface exhibited chaotic oscillations. The existence of chaos was confirmed by Fourier transformation of the time series data, Lyapunov exponent and fractal dimension.
The fractal dimension for this system was estimated to be between 5.2 and 5.8, in agreement with some recently found theoretical results, and the largest Lyapunov exponent was found to be positive, around 0.55, indicating chaos. The unfolding of the attractor on a phase plane indicated chaotic movement between two states, probably belonging to the family of spiral and screw chaos. It was also confirmed that the observed phenomenon was not generated due to the random number generator used in the computer program.
