The development of atmospheric lightning is initiated by a 'leader' phase during which ionized channels appear in virgin air. The use of rapid cameras, the measure of fields and currents associated with the discharge allow one to compare the propagation of laboratory leaders with those of natural or

we simulate lightning by letting the conductivity tend to infinity wherever the electric field reaches the breakdown threshold. Here we show that for this discharge model and for a one parameter family of integration schemes, the backward Euler scheme is the only one that leads to the equilibration

We study lightning on Jupiter and the clouds illuminated by the lightning using images taken by the Galileo orbiter. The Galileo images have a resolution of โˆผ25 km/pixel and are able to resolve the shape of single lightning spots, which have half widths (radii) at half the maximum intensity in the r
