The water molecules adsorbed at the soap-water interface in the mesophases of potassium lauratc-D20 system reorient rapidly while diffusing along the interface; our results aIso suggest that the dynamical behaviour of the aqueous and pknffinic media are s&on& correlated.

โฆ Synopsis
Using the master-equation method, we examine the effects of correlated internal rotations in an alkyl chain on the spectral densities of motion. It is assumed that the overall reorientation of molecules is decoupled from the internal motions in their alkyl end chains. The pentyl chain that is attached to a cylindrical biphenyl core in 4-n-pentyl4'cyanobiphenyl is studied. The reorientation of a symmetric top in an anisotropic potential is accounted for, using the small-step rotational diffusion model. The effects of a nematic mean field on the chain dynamics are discussed. Both Ji (IX) and Js( 2~) arc found to bc frequency dependent, with Jz( 2~) being weaker.
