✦ Synopsis

The asymmetric effect on mode localization of a symmetric structure possessing nearly equal frequencies is analyzed. A reduction solution for nearly equal frequency perturbation is used to relate modes of a perturbed (asymmetric) structure and modes of original (symmetric) structure. A simple criterion for the occurrence of mode localization is derived for a symmetric structure with attached members of substructures. Numerical results of illustrative examples confirm that the criterion is valid and useful for selecting structural parameters in design work.

## Abstract The momentum changes caused by localization are a central feature of wave‐particle duality. Investigating these changes in more detail, we find that single‐slit diffraction relies on a form of `interaction‐free' scattering, and that an ideal which‐way measurement can be made without any
