✦ Synopsis
No¨el modal filters based on multimode interference ha¨e been designed to o¨ercome the first-order mode influence on future optical network systems fabricated with wa¨eguides supporting two guided modes. A tolerance analysis for fabrication parameters and design rules with simple formulas are included. Specific designs are carried out in InGaAsPrInP buried wa¨eguides. These filters ha¨e rejection ratios to first-order mode greater than 25 dB and 0.1 dB losses at an optimum design length of 340 m. The tolerance ranges are q0.4᎐0.25 m width, y110 nm q 70 nm wa¨elength, 20% core quaternary height, and 2% core quaternary material gap.
