✦ Synopsis

Zealand. The assets transfers were completed in May 2007.

In Latin America, Clariant acquired masterbatch plants in Guatemala and Colombia. The Masterandino business in Colombia will add SFR 6 M to annual sales revenues and SFR 1 M to annual net income. Clariant also makes masterbatches at plants in Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. (See 'Focus on Pigments', Mar 2008, 4-5).

In Europe, Clariant acquired the Bornem (Belgium) masterbatch plant of Sioen Industries in part-exchange for a pigment pastes plant at St Jeoire (France) that it had inherited as part of the Ciba Masterbatch acquisition of 4Q 2006. Clariant recently sold its German unit making and selling Renol-E pigment blends to GE Habich Soehne (of Reinhardshagen). Meanwhile, the company retains three masterbatch plants in Germany -at Lahnstein (Rheinland-Pfalz), Ahrensburg (near Hamburg) and Doebeln (Saxony).

As part of its cost-cutting programme, Clariant is closing an organic pigments plant at Coventry, RI (in the United States) and a leather chemicals plant at Selby (UK), with the loss of 120 and 128 jobs respectively. It is also cutting its workforce at the Muttenz headquarters by 100.
