✦ Synopsis

Two different mitotic spatial models (Lavania & S harma, Biosystems 14:171 178, 1981, Ashley & Pocock, Genetica 55:16 l-! 69, 198 l) for the arrangement of the chromosomes in the nucleus are analysed for the sake of comparison and assessment. In general, the two models propose nearly the same orientation regarding chromosomal organization. However, the3; differ with respect to the position of homologous chromosomes, suggcsting respectively their adjacent or opposite location in somatic arrangement. The two proposals have been analysed in the light of experimental evidence as well as organizational interpretations. The arguments presented here support the adjacent location of somatic homologous chromosomes.
