✦ Synopsis

It is well known that the multinucleate cells called osteoclasts which are found in the sections of developing bone are commonly regarded as the direct agents of bone resorption. Jordan ( '18)' Jackson ( '04), Danchakoff ( '09)' and Maximow ('lo) state that osteoclasts are produced from mesenchymal or reticular cells by a process of fusion in the early stages of bone development. Arey ('20) thinks that osteoblasts give rise t o osteoclasts and also describes to some extent their fate, but the real function of these cells is still obscure at the present time.

c-Fos, a component of the dimeric transcription factor AP-1, is necessary for osteoclast formation. To determine whether c-Fos can substitute for any or all of the stimuli needed for osteoclast induction, we infected osteoclast precursors with retroviral vectors expressing c-Fos or the Fos-related p

Recently, it has been found that osteoclasts are induced and activated by osteoblastic cells through expression of receptor activator NF-kB ligand (RANKL), and that soluble recombinant RANKL, with M-CSF, can replace the need for osteoblastic cells in osteoclast formation. We exploited this opportuni

## Abstract ## Objective Osteoclast‐associated receptor (OSCAR) is a newly identified osteoclast‐specific receptor and is of key importance in the process of osteoclast costimulation. This study was undertaken to define the role of costimulation in osteoclast differentiation during inflammatory ar

We describe a method for the isolation and culture of osteoclast-like cells from cancellous bone chips of iliac crests from patients undergoing reconstructive maxillofacial surgery. Under aseptic conditions, bone chips were cut into small pieces, incubated briefly with collagenase, and the isolated
