โฆ Synopsis
A n experience with Mithramycin in the treatment of hypercalcemia of malignancy is reported. Mithramycin given by direct, single, intravenous injection of 25 pg/kg was effective in lowering serum calciums within 24 to 48 hours in the majority of patients studied. The duration of this effect has been quite variable, b u t repeated doses of single injections have proven to be successful in most cases treated. The potential clinical usefulness of this agent in the treatment of hypercalcemia is apparent. I t is reasonable to continue such studies on a long-term basis. Such studies are currently in progress.

T various types of neoplastic diseases is well established and not uncommonly presents a serious and often fatal complication. It has been shown to occur in patients with or without evidence of osseous metastases.16, T h e pathophysiology of this type of hypercalcemia has never been clearly defined. Indeed, it seems unlikely that one single mechanism could explain all the cases observed.lg I n addition to forced hydration and lowered calcium intake, a variety of therapeutic measures, including various chemotherapeutic
