The mineral composition of oil shales from three widely different areas within Australia has been examined by X-ray diffractometry after low-temperature ashing. Quartz is more abundant than calcite. Feldspar is prominent in the Permian oil-rich shale from Glen Davis, New South Wales. Clay mineralsare represented bysmectite, illite, kaoliniteandmixed-layerminerals (mostly mica-smectite). Thecontent of clay minerals is generally low, except in the Tertiary oil shale from Rundle, Queensland.
