The extent to which the ozone layer is being destroyed by chlorofluorocarbons is a subject of intensive research and controversy. It has now been found that chlorofluorocarbons adsorbed on SiO~2~ are “mineralized” to CO~2~, CO, and HCl on exposure to UV light or to sunlight at ground level. Whether this effect contributes significantly to conservation of the ozone layer in the troposphere cannot yet be decided.
