✦ Synopsis

Thc. essent, ial requiremcmts of m5rc:ro-nnd mjcrcic:lements o f a, bloom-forming blue-grwn alga Anabaencpsis raciborskii WOLOSZ have been dctermined on the basis of ALLEN a,nd AnNoN's medium. The requircment o f calcium and phosphorus was low, whereas requirements of sodium and magnesium for algal growth were high. It) was possible to replace potassium by sodium, and sodium was found to be essential for growt>h on Ny. A wide range of nitrat'e concentrations support,cd the growt,h whereas the reyuircment of ammonia aiid urea was low. The groivt,h was dependcnt on molybdenum when the alga was cultivated with N,. Manganew arid iron requirements werc l o w and the alga showcd a narrow range of cobalt tolerance. Modification of ALLEN and ARNON'S medium rcsult'ed in bet'ter growth and IS2 fixation of alga.

Effects of rice-field herbicide benthiocarb (S-(4-chlorobenzyl)-N,N-diethyl thiolcarbamate) was studied on the nitrogen-fixing blue-green alga Nostoc linckia. The herbicide caused inhibition of growth and heterocyst formation, an increase in intensity of photoacoustic signals, and a fourfold reducti
