HHI, Carter Cryogenics enter license agreement
S outh Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd (HHI) has signed a license agreement with the US's Carter Cryogenics for the manufacture and sale of LNG carrier cargo pumps.
The LNG carrier cargo pump is a cryogenic pump at the bottom of the cargo carrier, which discharges the cargo. The pumps are used to load and unload liquefied natural gas at -163ยฐC. Generally 8-10 pumps are mounted on an LNG carrier.
HHI will manufacture and market the pumps and has plans to localise cargo pump production through the technical development and transfer of technology from Carter Cryogenics in early 2008.
By localizing pump production, rather than importing them, HHI expects to save US$1.5 million per LNG carrier and improve the competitive pricing. At full capacity HHI estimates over US$15 million in total sales of this type of pump.
Since entering the industrial pump business in 1979, HHI has supplied about 3000 marine and industrial pumps for domestic and overseas markets.
