Mientras en un alto despacho Pepe Carvalho es acusado de asesinato, él y su inseparable Biscuter viajan en ferry rumbo a Génova bajo nombres falsos, los literarios Bouvard y Pécuchet. Junto a ellos navega una tal Madame Lissieux, con la que Biscuter parece entenderse muy bien, pero que desaparece al pisar suelo italiano, y un poco antes de que se estropeen los frenos del coche que conducía a los dos socios…, quienes, pese a todo, superan este primer escollo y prosiguen su periplo hacia Grecia, decididos a dar la vuelta al mundo.
