1,3-Dicarbonyl eompomids (1) were efficiently oxygetmted at the or-position with cesium salts, such as CsF or Cs2CO3 (0. l Meq) ill DMF at room temperature. Reaction of malonate derivatives (la, b) with excess amount (2 Meq) of Cs2CO3 gave ~t-hydroxyhnonoester (3) formed by oxygenation and partial hy&olysis, which was decarboxylated to a lactic acid derivative (5).
