The adult mouse brain contains a population of constitutively proliferating subependymal cells that surround the lateral ventricle and are the direct progeny of the neural stem cell. Constitutively proliferating cells divide rapidly; 6 days after labeling, 60% of their progeny undergo cell death, 25
