β¦ Synopsis
During the past 6 years, several articles have appeared in this and other journals purporting the detection of silicon degradation products in the blood and organs of subjects with silicone breast implants. Some of these findings are at variance with those reported on the basis of other analytical techniques such as atomic absorption. In a recent issue of the Journal, Garrido et al. published the above erratum (Magn Reson Med 1998;40:689) relating to one of the articles, provoking several Letters to the Editor. These are published below in the order in which they were received, along with a response by Garrido et al.
The Letter to the Editor, which I introduced in 1992, is to ''provide a forum for readers to critique papers in the journal.''
