โœฆ Synopsis

From a theoretical perspective, microwave spectroscopy has the potential to provide diagnostic information on solar flare plasmas, magnetic fields and energetic electrons. To interpret such spectra, one can exploit the fact that the microwave brightness temperature spectra from free-free brehmsstrahlung, thermal and non-thermal gyrosynchrotron radiation have distinct spectral shapes. Furthermore, the position of such spectra on brightness temperature / frequency plots is dependent on flare parameters such as temperature, electron density, magnetic field and/or electron spectral index.

Solar coronal loops are observed to be remarkably stable structures. A magnetohydrodynamic stability analysis of a model loop by the energy method suggests that the main reason for stability is the fact that the ends of the loop are anchored in the dense photosphere. We have compared microwave imaging data for a small flare with simultaneous hard X-ray spectral observations. The X-ray data suggest that the power-law index 5 of the energy distribution of the radiating electrons is 5.3 (thick-target) which differs significantly from the estimate (b = 1.4) from a h
